At our 5PM service this week, we read about the Feast of Dedication in John’s Gospel. So far in John, we have read about the Feast of Sabbath in chapter 5, the Feast of Passover in chapter 6, the Feast of Tabernacles from John 7-10 and now we have the Feast of Dedication, also known as Hanukkah. The big question which comes up in these chapters is the question of Jesus’ identity. Who is Jesus? Jesus identifies himself as both Messiah and Son of God.
During Hanukkah, the Jewish people celebrate their deliverance from the Syrians who sought to destroy their religion. As they celebrate their deliverance, Jesus declares that God has sent Him as the ultimate deliverer. All these feasts which the Jews have celebrated over the past few chapters find fulfilment in Jesus.
