Dear Friends,
Acts 6:1-7 – when God is at work in the church through His Spirit, we encounter problems. Some of the problems are “good” or growth problems. The early church is increasing and this had the unintended consequence of tension between 2 different cultural groups: Hellenistic and Hebraic Jews.
The church was supporting widows but the Hellenistic widows are overlooked in the distribution of food. The apostles listened to the concern and called the church together and discussed how they should solve the problems. This is a wonderful example of recognising a problem in the church and being willing to be involved in the solution. When we see problems in the church God grows a love to seek Him for a solution.
The church is not perfect but it is God’s church. The apostles declare an essential priority – they must not neglect the teaching of God’s Word and prayer. Jesus came to preach the Word of God (Mark 1:38). The practical ministry of the church was not neglected nor was the teaching of God’s Word and prayer neglected. Praise God for the ministry of all people in the church. We need everyone involved. In fact, that is when spiritual growth occurs most rapidly.
God’s Blessing David O’Mara
