Cast off Your Burdens

Inscribed on the cross outside our church are the words,

“When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself. So come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

These words of Jesus are immensely comforting. As Jesus was lifted up on the cross, he called all people to come to him, to cast off their burdens, and find rest in him.

At our 5PM service this week, we read about Jesus’ resurrection. The cross was not the end of the story, in fact it is the beginning of the story of Christianity. At the cross, the sins of all believers, past, present, and future were atoned for. In rising from the dead, Christ has defeated death on our behalf and guaranteed access to heaven for all believers, something which would be impossible to gain on our own. Next week, we will resume our series in John, picking up where we left off from John 13:1-17.
