At our 5PM service this week, we read that Jesus predicts his own death. He does this a number of times in all four Gospels. The emphasis in this prediction is the implication of his death for his followers. Spiritual death is the path to spiritual life. If our focus is only on the here and now, we will lose what really matters most: hope of eternal life in heaven. On the other hand, if we love Jesus more than our own lives and are willing to give up our lives for him, then we will gain eternal life in heaven. We are called to reject worldliness and embrace the eternal life which Jesus offers us through his death.
